“Hi, nice to meet you. So, what do you do?”
“I’ve been an engineer most of my life. In 1996 I took my first job with Hewlett-Packard and spent the majority of my time in, etc…. In 2004, our department was eliminated and I became the project manager of another division, etc…”
We hear this type of conversation all the time. I call it the “the resume response”.
This is where the problem begins.
We tell others what we are, and not who we are!
Sure, we all need to establish ourselves as credible. Titles do that for us in part, but as human beings each of us have lives and stories far greater and more meaningful than the boundaries of a title.
As human beings, we are distinct individual voyagers, traveling at our own pace toward our own unique destination. How we take on life as a whole and handle its peaks and its valleys, tells the greater tale of character, heart, strength and triumph then any simple title could imply.
